Auckland, Thursday, As a result of Sandwich running third in th'e Cesarewitch Stakes in Englahd yesterday, Mr. J. E. Cofnes, of Mount Eden, and' his son, Mr. J. W. B. Cornes, of Mount Roskill, wiri £10,000 (plus exchange) between I them iri the Irish Sweepstake. Frank Ritchie", a 15-year-old agricriltutal stu'dent of the Seddon Memorial Technical College drew an acceptor, Bonny Brighteyes. Mr. Cornes, senior, who is in a grbcery brisiness, is well-known in Mount Eden bowling circles. An Agreement Reaehed When the Corfaes' learned that Ritchie, who lives only a few doors away, had also drawn a horse they came to an agreement with him urider which if either Sandwich or Bonny Brighteyes ( Ritchie' s horse) gained a place, the owner of the winning ticlcet would pay the others £5000 for first, £2500 for second and £1500 for third. So Master Ritchie, besides £700 odd, which he will receive for drawing Bonny Brighteyes will get £1500 out of Cornes' prize bf £10,000. The Cornes' faihilies, senior and junior, and the Ritchie family endeavoured vainly to hear the result pf tbe race by shortwave radio, but the news eventually reaehed them by cable. The £10,000 prize will be incf eased by about £1000" through exchange.
