A NEW ALARM POST

TO AID PUBLIC AND POLICE. A new type of street post-telephone-and-alarm, designed to simplify and speed-up communication hetween the public and police stations, is being developed by the General Post Office, England. By opening a door a member of the pUblic calls the station, makes availUble a direct. line of communication between it and himself, and lights (if required) a signal lamp on the top of the post to call patrolling constables. In additiou the post conthins, in a lqcked compartment, a telephone for the exclusive use of police, and apparatus, hy means of which a station Can call any police officer near the post by setting off an alarm bell. The act of opening the door givss a distinctive call signal at the police switchboard, which indicates to the police telephonist that the call is i from a member of .the public. On reply, the voice of the police telephonist is heard amplified through a grill, and the caller speaks back into the same grill. At the end of a conversation, the caller releases tlis door, which closes itself.
