LOCAL AND GENERAL

"Nothing Doing" "You can't gqt an order against a man on relief work nnless he has got some other means," gaid Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., dealing with a judgment su'mmons case in the Rotorua Court yesterday. First Clnb Tramp A successful first outing of approximateiy 20 milqs was made on Sunday by members of the reeently formed Rotorua Tramping Cluh. Early in the morning fourteen tranipers assemfiled at the starting point in Fenton Street and moved off for their objective, Rotokawa, where a stop was made for lunch. The return journey was commenced early in the afternoon, the party following the lake front and arriving haek in town thoroughly pleased with their first effort. Very Few Caught The summertime. act was quietly ushered into operation throughout the Dominion early on Sunday morning and yery few forgetful psrsons are reported to have omitted to naako the change before retiring* .on Saturday night. During the morning services of the churehes a few stragglers were noticed arriving half an hour late, but the total was surprisingly small. Although the extra daylight in the evening was noticeab|e the main eifeet was lost owing to the dull conditions which pertained all day. . His Past or Future? , A writer in a recent issue of the Sydney Referee may have been anticipating the future or harking back to the glorious past, but in recording the voyage of Arthur Mailey's cricket team he referred to their hospitable entertainment' at the hands of "New Zealand's Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates." A. and P- Building The much debated question of the erection of a permanent building for the Rotorua A. and P. Association will be re-opene.d on Friday evening, when a speciai general meeting of members has been called to consider rescinding the recent resolution postponing the building programme. The meeting is to be held in the Peerless Hall at 8 p.m. Much Activity Large purchases of cattle have been made of late by the Native Department for the stoeking of its developmental farms in the Rotorua district and in addition many loads of manures have arrived by rail to the order of the same consignees. Farmers Suffer Serious loss was suffered by Messrs Hunt and Darragh, farmers, of Malfroy Road, last Sunday as a result of the act of some irresponsible possessor of a rifie who accidentally or otherwise shot a cow. Shooting on this property is strictly prohibited and further enquiries are heing made. To-morrow's Sports Although weather conditions late last night did not show much sign of rapid improvement, hopes are entertained that they will clear sufficiently by to-morrow to permit the main sports day of the Rotorua High School to be held. Th'e excellent performances registered in the boys' events held last Saturday indicate that this year the standard of athletics at the school is very high and there should be many close finishes in to-morrqw's events. In addition to the boys' events several girls' finals will be decided and parents and friends wil1 be the guests of the headmaster and staff at afternoon tea.
