MAORI ENTERTAINMENT
The Opotiki branch of the Women's Institute met on Saturday evening. Mrs. J. Cooper, who has taken ■over the position of president, owing too the departure of Mrs. Wagner, presided. A very interesting programme had been arranged, and proved very popular, thanks to Sister Jessie and her Maori performers. The programme was: Maori song; poi dance by Maori girls; double poi dance; dance by Maori girls; recitation by little Maori girl; demonstration of mat making by. Maori woman. Sister Jessie also exhibited Maori mats, bags, kits and fish hooks, all made by th'e natives. The mats and bags were made from flax and feathers including pigeon, kea, pheasant. The fish hook was made from a pawa shell and a human bone. After supp'er had been served an amusing sketch (written by Miss Brookes, of Motu) was given by Mesdames Morrel, G. Vanstone, S. White, R. Hedley, Misses E. Bridge and J. Armstrong. Mrs. C. Hambly moved a very hearty vote of thanks to Sister Jessie for providing a most interesting entertainment. A collection was taken up in aid of the Wairoa Earthquake Reliefi and the plight of a certain family in
Opotiki who had been appealing for help, was discussed.
