MAORI CONCERT METHODIST MISSIONARY PARTY VISITS OPOTIKI A very successful concert was held in the Regent Theatre on Wednesday evening, when a Maori Choir organised by the Rev. A. J. Seamer (general superintendent of the Methodist Home Mission Department) gave a most interesting and entertaining concert. The Mayor, Mr. J. T. Thompson,, opened the concert with a few words of welcome to the visitors and one of the Maoris replied in the Maori language which was interpreted by the Rev. Seamer. Each visitor then thanked the Mayor and Mayoress and the Rev. H. R. Harris (Methodist minister at Opotiki) in the Maori manner. The choir lined up on the stage and sang the Lord's Prayer, followed 'by Psalm 21. Some interesting tales of Maui were told by one of the performers, and a poi canoe dance, which was given by both the men and the women was encored. Next came a solo "E Pari Ra," and an action song was given as an encore. • A number of stirring vocal and instrumental items followed. Some of these, "Lead Me Gently Home," "Annie Laurie" (by request), "Waiata Poi," "Home Little Maori Home," accompanied by the steel guitar, banjo, and ukelele, were heartily encored. This was followed byi a medley of songs, sung in Maori. The last long item was given with a typical swing, instrumental music, haunting melodies, soothing harmonies, ancient games, weird waitas and stirring hakas.
