VICTIM DIES IN HOSPITAL Auckland, midnight. Miss Chappell reeeived terrible head injuries and died in hospital this evening. McFarlane's condition is reported as grave. Miss Chappell was 44 years of age and her parents reside at Grey Lynn. Her mother is dangerously ill at the present time. McFarlane has lived at Mt. Albert for the past eight years. He is a son of one of the early Scotch pioneers who married the Maori princess, Otihia at Kawhia, in the early days of the colony. He was formerly a large land-owner in the Wairarapa and North Auckland districts, and was an enthusiastic gardener. He was a keen student of politics and during his retirement had written extensively on political subjects/ A 'week ago he instructed Miss Chappell to burn all his writings.
