Greymouth, Monday. . _ The winner of the first prize of £2000, in No. 18 Art Union, drawn on September 24, Miss M. A. Stopforth, of Hokitika, to-day had her winning ticket, No. C61090, stolen from> her residence. It appears that a young man called at her residence, and asked for 30s for his fare to Christchurch, stating that he had, just been discharged from hospital. Miss Stopforth gave him £1 and also invited him to have a meal. The young man entered the house, but wliile Miss Stopforth was preparing the meal for him, he noticed her handhag, containing the winning ticket, also a sum of money, and without waiting for her to return to the roorn, he allegedly took the i bag and deeahiped, making ofF to j town. » j Miss Stopforth informed the police, and Constable Doughtery, who had a ear handy, immediately motored out j alohg the road to Mumara, and su.ceeeding in overtaking and arresting I the maii 25 hours after the theft, con- ! veying him to Hokitika lock-up, i where the bag and the eontents were found intaet, including the ticket. He will be charged at the Hokitika Court. The quick recovery of the missing bag is considered a creditable feat on the part of the police.
