ACTRESS INJURED
STAGE ACCIDENT MISS ELLA SHIELDS ST(RUCK \ BY FALLING CURTAIN. TREATED IN HOSPITAL At the close of the afternoon performance of "Pleasure Bound" at the Criterion Theatre, Sydney, recently, the descending- curtain struck Miss Ella Shields, the principal actress, a violent blow on the head. She "was almost made unconscious, but rnaintained her composure so that the rnajority of the audience did-not know: that she had been hurt. Immediately Miss Shields left th'e stage, however, a \yound in her head began to bleed copiously, and she was hurried to a private hospital, avhere four stitches were inserted in the wound. She appeared in the evening performance of "Pleasure Bound," although she was suffering from a.severe headach'e and weakness as a result of her wound. The accident occurred at the end of the performance, vhen the whole company was on the st ige singing the closing chorus. Miss Shields was standing a little too far forward and was struck hy the wooden batten which" is placed about a foot from the bottom of the curtain to keep it taut. Miss Shields had almost recovered from the effects of her experience the following day, hut was wearing a handage.
