DREAD OF MOROCCO

THE FOREIGN LEGION. Reputed to have twice escaped from the French Foreign Legion, Clarence Edward Maxey, of Sheffield, was sentenced at Macclesfield in July to three mouths' imprisonment for defrauding a minister. The Rev. E. A. Hobhy, a Baptist pastor, stated that Maxey called at his house in Octoher, 1930, accompanied by his wife, anu said that he was scranded at Macclesfield. A detective stated that, when a warrant was issued for Maxey's arrest, it was ascertained that he had left the country and joined the Foreign Legion. He was arrested at Sheffield. Maxey stated that when he came out of prison five years ago he left the country and joined the F'oreign Legion. After a time he escaped and returned to England. He was divorced, and when arrested he was askeing the parents of a girl at Sheffield for permission to marry hey. If he was convicted again he would be sent hack to Morocco, and the magistrates knew what they would do with him there. The detective said that Maxey was arrested on a boat at Harwiclc, but escaped. He was afterward arrested at Boulogne, and sent back ,to the Legion, but escaped from it for the second time.
