TWO YOUNG MEN DROWNED DESPITE EFFORTS AT RESCUE

Rec. Oct. 2, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 2. The first surfing tragedy of the seasqn occurred yesterday at Scarborough on the South Coast. The victims were Jack Stanton, aged 22 years, and James Tomlinson, aged 16 years, of Wentworthville. Two others, who participated in rescue efforts, nearly lost their lives, and were taken from the water in a semi-conscious condition. All were members of a church' picnic party engaging in a day at the seaside. They were almost carried seaward by the undertow. The first to get into difficulties was a small boy, resulting in Stanton and Tomlinson losing their lives in attompting to reach him.
