CHESS NOTES

ROTORUA V GISBORNE M. E. GQLDSTEIN'S VISIT In the recent contest between Rotorua and Gisborne, the match finished with f our wins, f our draws, and four . losses .on each side. The games at the top five boards went easily in Rotorua's favour, i.e., two wins and three draws. Had this creditable standard been maintained by the local' tail, the Blackburn Cup would have changed hands for the first time in its history. It is hard to account for the losses at boards, six, seven, eight and 12, more particularly as the team ,was a most even one, the difference in play between boards one and twelve being about three moves. Keen interest is being displayed by members in the simultaneous exhibition to be given by Mr. M. E. Goldstein towards the end of November. According to a contributor to the Australasian Chess Review, Mr. Goldstein's hobby is dancing. Although he has written the world's leading text book on the chess openings, he would rather have invented the blackbottom.
