MORE INSPECTORS

The Government's decision to appoint inspectors to enforce the payment * of the unemployment taxation adds a few more to the growing army of officialdom with which this country is afflicted. It would be interesting to know .upon what terms these latest additions are to be appointed and what additional cost they will impo'se upon the already disproportionate overhead costs eonnected with the collection of the unemployment taxation. At the present time, the Unemployment Board promises to develop into a particularly adhesive Old Man of the Sea and this growing burden of officialdom raises the unpleasant conjeetule as to whether he will ever be dislodged. Unemployment has foisted on the country another and unweildy Government department to offset the economies which have been made on very mariy of the revenue earning departments. This applies particularly to the P. and T. Department which has been called ujpon to carry out a very large ' shafe of thd ihachinery administration of the Unemployment Act. Unquestiohably : the extra work thus placed upon the post office officials must mili- : tate against the -vitality of that department in its revenue earn-

ing capacity. Nd doubt various prosecutions will be lodged as; a result of the appearance of Unemployment tax inspectors, biit in the light of past experieiice, it is probable that £5 will be spent for every $1 collected. '
