SCHMELLING BEATS WALKER ON A TECHNICAL K.O. •HEAVY PUNISHMENT

Rec. Sept. 27, 5.5 p.m. New York, Sept. 26. Max Schmelling to-night defeated Mickey Walker, former world's undefeated middleweight champion in the eighth round with a technical knock out. In the first round, Walker left hooked to the body, Schmelling backing Walker into clinclies. Schmelling shook Walker with a volley of hooks to the jaw, and then floored him with a right to the chin for a count of six, the spell ending the round. In the second round Schmelling with a right to the chin, staggered Walker, who f ought back gamely, but Schmelling again hit him with three safe rights. Walker was wobbly and* badly hurt, but flung himself on the German, belting on Schmelling's body. Schmelling ripped back with uppercuts. Then in a rally, Walker pressed Schmelling on the ropes and hammered him on the head and body. In the third round, Walker landed a left hook on Schmelling's face, but the German retaliated with a sharp right. In the fourth. round, Walker dug a left hook in Schmelling's body and caught a hard right to the chin. The pair exchanged hooks and swung fists to the body. Walker shook off two smashing rights to the head and hammered Schmelling across the ring. They were in a clinch at the bell. Schmelling In Trouble In the fifth round, the German welted with left hooks and Walker nailed him with a right upper cut and nearly floored Schmelling with a left hook to the body, Schmelling being in pain as Walker chased him around the ring, sending his head back wifh lefts. Schmelling, however, smashed , . Walker to the jaw and drove home _ another hard right to the head as ihe - bell went.
In the opening of the sixth round, • Schmelling was more aggressive and landed a right which opened a gash in Walker's upper lip. There was new fire in the German's attaclc as he jabbed Walker with a left to the head and forced him to cover. Walker brought a right and left to the body as the bell \vent. In the seventh round, Schmelling jabbed away at Walker's face, but Walker bapked three lefts to the German's body and then a right tO' the head and drove him across the ring with' a body attack. He sent Schmelling ,to the ropes and shook his head back with upper cuts when the round ended. In opening the eighth round, Schmelling , jabbed Walker on the nose and connected with a rigbt to the jaw. Walker came back with a right to the chin, but again the German sent Walker's head back with rights which sent him reeling^ and he went down for a count of six on a right to the chin. Walker was almost helpless as the German smashed him about ihe ring with his left. Walker reeled stumbling from one side of the ring to the other, gamelyfighting, but in a terribly weakened condition. Schmelling was unable_ to floor him again with Walker reeling in a eorner as the gong rang. Walker's manager refused to allow him to continue.-
