FRENCH ^UBMARINE SISTER SHIP OF ILL-FATED PROMOTHER fs WRECiiED EXPLOSION AND FIRE

Rec. Sept. 27, 5.5 p.m'. Cherhourg, Sept. 26. Ten were injured in an explosion of the accumulators of the French suhmafine Persee, a sister-ship of the Promothee, during her final trials. The captain wirelessed for assistance, and tugs ane towing the Persee to Cherbourg. The explosion,- which occurred in the Diesel engine room, killed the engineer (Lecoq)', fracturied the sku'lls of three of the crew, and badly injured six others. Altogeth'er, 32 were hurt in the explosion or fire which followed. The flames were quickly extinguished. The men rushed to the bridge and donned life belts preparatory to jumping into the sea, but the officers reassured them and ordered them to return to their stations. The explosion was caused by the bursting of the engine's water jacket.
