Protest against several activities of tbe Railway Department which i!ntisrfere with private enterprise, is to be carried to the Prime Minister by a deputation of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, according to a decision made by the executivd. The discussion dealt with the competitipn of the railway workshops with private ettgineers, the competition with private carrying firms feeding the railways, and the action of the department in taki'ng over the Auckland-, Christchurch and Dunedin station bookstalils, instead of submitting them again to public tender for lease by p'i'ivate booksellers. It was stated that the railway workshops were producing in excess of their own requirements and ' were sffpplying Governiheiit departments, with the result that private 'enterprise was now being made to pay for past mistakes in over-equip-ping the workshops.
