CURT REPLY

ON WIDOWS' PENSIONS Wellington, Saturday. A curt reply was issued by tlie Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes late this afternoon to statements made by Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, concerning the position of miners' widows' pensions. The Prime Minister said when the question was previously before the House Mr. Goates intimated that the Government would take into consideration the claims of widows affected, as he did not want to see hardship inflicted on them. Mr. Samuel had claimed that a definite promise iVas made that legislation would be introduced this session.

"This is the point," continued Mr. Forbes. "Is it likely that the Government, when putting through a clause providing for the expiration of pensions at the end of six months, would promise to repeal it at the time it was to come into operation? "The position is quite absurd. Presumably Mr. Samuel did not attach much importance to the so-called promise since he voted on the issue against the Government he was returned to support. Another point is that I very rarely reply to any statements made on the third reading of a bill."
