GRAND, TO-NIGHT.

"An American Tragedy," based on Theodore Dreiser's novel of the same name, will be presented at the Grand Theatre to-night. Heading a distinguished cast in what many consider to be the most important screen play since the advent of talking pictures are Phillips Holmes, Sylvia Sidney, Frances Dee, Irving Pichel and Lucille La Verne. "An American Tragedy" is the story of a young boy, Clyde Griffiths, and a girl, Roberta Alden, who brought together through mutual loneliness, are caught up in a mad, uncompromising situation that crushes them both. The manner in which director Josef von Sternberg has handled the production; the skill in which he has fired the players with understanding for the great struggle ! for happiness as depicted by Dreiser j in the original novel, malces "An Am- , erican Tragedy" a picture of compel- { ling power and intensity that deserj ves and commands the attention of evei'y intelligent theatre-goer. I "An American Tragedy" is bold, pointed, outspoken drama that is real, I true and understandable, to anyone I who has ever tasted the hopes, joys | and disillusionments of every day exj istence.
