BRIGHT DISPLAY

DAFFODIL SHOW EXCELLENT EXHIBITS AT ST. LUKE'S ANNUAL "AT HOME" LIST OF PRIZEWINNERS In delightfully appropriate spring weather the St. Luke's 27th anxiual Daffodil "At Home" and Spring Flower Show was opened in the Peerless Hall yesterday afternoon. On entering the hall, the scene presented a blaze of colour with the fresh fragrance of newly cut spring blooms. In variety and quality the display was fully up to the higli standard set at previous exhibitions and attracted an excellent attendance throughout the day. In opening the exhibition, Dr. H. Bertram commented on the rapid progress which had been made since the first show, when the two main exhibitors had been Mrs. C. A. Clarke and Mr. Halkett, and expressed pleasure at seeing that these two exhibitors were still represented in the prize lists. He considered it regrettable that more intex*est in the growing of bulbs for exhibition purposes was not taken by Rotorua gardeners and said that in other New Zealand towns of the same size, shows comprising fuller quality and'better variety were provided. Dr. Bertram considered that steps should be taken to interest the children in the cultivation of exhibition blooms and said that this would be the means of stimulating the interest of the public in the show. He said that should the society proceed along the lines he had outlined he would be pleased to present a challenge cup, for juvenile competition which he suggestsd should be known as the ClarkeHalkett Cup. He remarked on the great pleasure which the competitive shows gave really enthusiastic gardeners and appealed to the promoters to persevere in their efforts.
