THE CHAMPIONSHIP WARATAH WINS FINAL AFTER GOOD GAME MATAMATA MATCH TO-MORROW

(Notes by

Waratah, on Saturday, definitely clinched their claim to championship honoux's'for 1932 by defeating High School Old Students (A) by 10 goals to 6. Until a minute or two before half-time, the game was exceptionally even. the score see-sawing until it stood at three all; then just a second before half-time was called, Waratah secured another goal making the score 4 — 3 in their favour. In the second spell, Waratah attacked strongly and with smart teaxn work, kept up a fast pace securing six goals to Old Students' two. Although Old Students strove diligently to reduce this lead, they were unable to do so, and Waratah thus ran out the winners by a comfortable margin. M. Ford, Waratah defence, was always ready and was responsible for numerous fine interceptions and saves. D. Davies again did good field work as Waratah' s main centre, while B. Johnson (H.S.O.S.), showed to advantage in intercepting the ball from Wai*atah's defences. Mrs. I. Shearer refereed. This is the third successive year chat H.S.O.S. have been runners-up for the Rotorua championship. They eertainly deserve better luck next season. The Kowhai-Kiwi game was a walk over for the former, the Kiwi team sxifTering from both a shortage of players and poor team tactics. Ngongotaha v. H.S.O.S. (B) High School fielded a very weak team last Saturday. Their best forward was absent through an injui'y to her leg, reeeived whilst playing basketball at Opotiki, while two strong defenders were away on holidays. The game opened quietly, but increased in pace as time went on. Ngongotaha played a good game and their fox*wards made use of all opportunities for good shooting. The score, 11 — 9. showed that in spite of High School's weak combination, they were by no meaxis disgraced. Mrs. K. Walker was the referee.
