WITNESS WHO CLAIMED HE SAW STREET ACCIDENT

Auckland, Thursday. As the sequel to a street accident and the subsequent successful claim for damages, Ernest Cheadle (30), a oarrier and contractor, was charged to-day with perjury. It was alleged that he swore in the Supreme Court that he was in Sy--nonds Street at 1 p.m. pn February 23, and saw the accident, whereas in fact he was not there and did not oee the accident. He gave this evidence on behalf of a pedestrian named Karews, who was awarded £1116 arid costs against a motor truck driver, named Holton. There are many witnesses to he called. It was stated that there were no cye-witnesses of the accident except»ng the accused, who swore that he saw the truck strike Karews. One witness this morning said that accused with with him all day on February 23, and they were never in Symonds Street at the time of the accident. i Accused pleaded not guilty and was conimitted for trial.
