SPEAKER'S BEREAVEMENT

Wellington, Thursday. Owing to the death of his mother in Dunedin this morning, the Speaker of the 'House of Representatives (Sir Charles Statham) did not take part in the ceremony connected with the opening of Parliament. This afternoon, when the House met at 2.30 p.m., the clerk Mr. T. D. H. Hall), anounced that Mr. Speaker was unavoidably absent and the deputy-Spealcer (Mr. S. G. Smith) took the chair and conducted the preliminary proeeedings. He also preceded members of the House of Representatives into the Legislative Council chamber, where the Governor General read the Speech from the Throne.
