WANGANUI SPRING CHANCES OF GIBRALTAR IN MARANGAI HANDICAP. THE FIELDS REVIEWED.
(Notes by '
Fields are up to standard for the Spring meeting of the Y/anganui Jockey Club and though the sandy, sauc- - er-shaped course often upsets ealculations, the racing should give some indication as to future possibilities. * * * =s
The day kicks off with the Maiden race, for three-year-olds and upwards, run over the usual six furlongs. There is not, naturally, a great deal of form to go upon, hut the Te Awamutu sprinter Illuminelli should soon
break maiden status. Cape of Good Hope despite his unweildy name sh'aped moderately last season, whilst Dakar is a fair hack. It loolcs to lie hetween these three: — Illuminelli Dakar Cape of Good Hope from — MAIDEN RACE OF 65sovs. Three-year-olds and upwards, 8.5. Six furlongs. All Supreme, Illuminelli, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Fair, Royal Papa, Swift and Sure, Linoleum, Boon, Glowlight, Dakar, Whetu Ma, Taitoru, Hawora. * :!•- =;= * There is no hurdle race this time, the Okehu High-weight taking its place and here is where Fernden though he has a poultios may make the pace too fast for the rest. Henry of Navaxre is still in the picture and a good one in Auctioneer is making his initial bow this season. If iit he should run well. Okapua, who ran so prominently in the south may find the pace too hot but he must be reckoned with as must the Frankton horse High Commissioner. It is by no means an easy race to sort out and favourites may be: — Fernden High Commissioxrer Henry of Navarre from — OKEHU HIGH-WEIGHT of 75sovs. One-mile and a quarter. Fernden 10.6, Henry of Navarre 9.9., Warfille, Bon Eve 9.5, Auctioneer 9.2, Okapua, Platina, Day Lass, High Commissioner 9.0. * * * * The Putiki Hack usually ends iil a I boilover. Tigerism has the thiclc end j with Kotaki Eka next and the latter 1 should run it out and has the pace | early to get out and get a good "pos- j sie" on the tuming course. Air Lad- j die has been showing a bit of recent ; form whilst in the light-weights Ythan and Captain Dan appeal though the i latter has not seen silk for a while.
The best read: — Kotaki Eka Air Laddie Ythan from — PUTIKI HACK of 70sovs. Eight furlongs and a half. Tigerism 9.0, Kotaki Eka 8.4, Air 1 Laudie 8.1, Ben Hur 8.0, Farmer 7.13, ■ Arilcitea, Thrasher 7.11, Miss Shef j 7.5, Seamond 7.2, Ythan, Invictus, j Cape Paraki, Miss Beatriee, Vaude- j ville, Captain Dan, Tangiroa 7.0. I :J: * =!: | The Seafield 75 furlongs is a mud- ; dling race hut suits the lay-out of the course. Refresher is likely to run ; better — a whole lot better — than he ' did at Marton and should be watched. ! Royal Bengal is recovered from the kid- j ney trouble which held him up whilst | both Korokio and Fiji are well. Pomp 1 on his home course is a distant possi- j bility, whilst All Humbug and Orby's | Choice will not be friendless. Form points to: — Refresher Royal Bengal Korokio from — • SEAFIELD HANDICAP of SOsovs. Seven furlongs and a half. Refresher 8.11, Grand Jury 8.9, Chopin 8.8, Royal Bengal, Korokio 8.5, j Fiji 8.1, Pomp, All Humbug 7.12, \ Orby's Choice 7.9, Cluny, Eastertime, 1 Vitaphone 7.7. * *i* * * The Durie Hack is a pure gamble, with most of the contestants having no form this season. Mostly it is a case of what is fittest and where it is drawn which makes all the difference at the Riverside City, and good beginners are: — Bambury Ida Merling Gay Court DUHIE HACK of 70sovs. Six furlongs.
Ganpat, Davistock, Gay Court 8.8, Chief Marionette 8.4, Bambury 8.1, Forest Stag, Posy 7.8, Miss Cavendish 7.6, Ida Merling 7.5, Aga Khan, Carfex 7.4, Lady Ronald 7.3, Late Jest 7.2, Willowmere, Dick Whittington, Divola, Merry Way 7.0. * * =;-• * The Maranga Handicap, the main event of the day should see a good race. Ruanui has the load with 8.11 and on that weight Gibraltar, who has earried 8.10 to win classic races and has only 8.6 here should be able to smile through easily. Atholspear was not equal to winning amongst the duds at Gisborne and should hardly be equal to defeating a Foley Memorial winner with only 31b in his favour. Little Doubt is so "ifty" that one" is afraid to recommend him but if he takes it into his head to gallop he will he very hard. Teller is in form and may be close but on form neither Statuary nor Vitaphone appeal. It may end. — Gibraltar Ruanui Teller from — * :!•'
MARANGAI HANDICAP of 105 sovs One mile and a quarter. Ruanui 8.11, Gibraltar 8.6, Atholspear 8.3, Little Doubt 8.0, Teller 7.9, Statuary 7.3, Vitaphone 7.0. * * * * Ten are left in the Flying and Refresher figures in this also. Consent, with winter hurdling, is fit and Aston is a fair sort. Orapai may not he ready yet, though sh'e has done good
track work. View Halloa won this last year and may land the double. La Mpderne is fair, but King Ford should be suited by the turning track and may be the toughest of all. The issue may include: — King Ford Refresher Consent from — FLYING HANDICAP of 90sovs. Six furlongs. Consent 9.0, Aston, Orapai 8.10, Refresher 8.8, View Halloa 8.6, Royal Hunting 7.10, La Moderne, Head Lady 7.9 King Ford, 7.5, Sir Pombal, 7.0,
