MAJESTIC

TO-DAY AND TO-NIGHT Janet Gaynor in "Delicious' proves again that she is the exception to the "luxury and wealth" rule of the movies. In this picture, in which she is co-starred with Charles Farrell, she is again most appealing as the pathetic little figure surrounded by poverty and squalour through which her innate goodness and harm shine bright■est. "Delicious" is a romantic comedy drama set to music. Its melodies-^ and there are six of th'em — were created especially for the production by George Gershwin, whose popular songs, musical comedies, and"serious compositions such as "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Concerto in F," have stamped ' him as America's leading modern composer. Ira Gershwin, his talepted hrother, wrote his lyrics. It is hard to choose between the songs, although the hit melody, "Somebody from Somewhere," which Janet sings, was undoubtedly the one most heartily applauded at yesterday's showing. Another number to receive an unstinted response was "Raphsody in Rivets," thematic motif of the thrilling dramatie climax of the picture. The story, an original by Guy Bol- , ton, relates the ventures of a Scotch orphan lassie, portrayed by Miss. Gay- ■ nor, seeking a home in America. It begins among the colourful p'easantry in the steerage of a large ocean liner, where Janet makes friends with a troupe of Russian entertainers and I continues with her exciting life after j she eludes immigration officers to enj ter the country illegally. ! Romance enters her life on the boat i when she beeomes friends with the | leader of the troupe, played by Raul | Roulien, who promptly falls read : over heels in love with her and writes

the infectious tune., "Delicious," mspired hy her quaint mispronounciations. Her affairs of the heart take on com'plications when Farrell, as a polo player returning from European triumphs, also beeomes infatuated with her. IIow she finally straightens out her difficulties with the immigration authorities, and settles for all time the disturbances love has caused in her heart, brings out the thrilling climax and completes the delightful story.
