The fire apparently started in the rear of the Bargain Store, and had a firm hold before the alarm was given. The brigade saved the Post Office, which was scorched and had several windows cracked. Most of the stock in McCorkindale's shop was saved. Some of the stock was also removed from Huggin's shop. The brigade had a strenuous fight. Salvage work was done by the police and spectators.
