(Press. Assn.-

SGIIOOL ABANDONED

-By Telegraph — Oopyrlglit) .

Gisborne, Sunday. As the result of £in inspection hy the Ilawkes Bay Education Board architect this morning, it has been decided that the upper storey of the main school be evacuattjd, and the pxxpils removed to the technical school and the infants' school. Several tremors were experienced to-day, the two heaviest were at 0 a.m. and 10.45 a.m. Little Inierruption In Trade Perhaps two or three business premises have heen vacated as a result of damage, but generally there has been no intemxption in trade, except sueh as was caused l>y the loss of stocks. Some householders have heen inconvenienced as a result of the destruction of chimneys and their inability to light fires, but in no case has a residence had to he vacated and electricity, gas and water services are functioning as usual, the latter

having been cut off for only a part of one day. In other instances the chimneys appear to be intact, but are unusable pending a certificate of their soundness. No actual hardships have resulted from the disturbance, although so far as is lcnown notlxing has been published to indicate that the situation is more serious than it is. The Post Office tower is showing extensive craclcs, and will probably have to be demolished. The authorities ai;e awaiting the decision of the Govemment architect. •Otherwise the Post Office buildings stood tho shocks remarkably well. The deputy ehairman of the Un-

employment Board has authorised the xxninteiTupted xxse of subsidised hibour for restoration work at speeial rates. The Borough Council meets on Monday to frame a "definite. prdgramme of restoration work. Architects find that buildings strengthene'd since the last earthquake stood np well, most of the damage being confined to premises to which attention had not been given. \
