LOCAL AND GENERAL

Lovely Weather Rotorua was particularly fortunate during the last week-end in its weather. Saturday was mainly fine and Sunday was a beautiful day enabling residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor pastimes to the full. Lucky or Not? A visitor to the Rotorua golf eourse during the week-end is wondering whether he was really lucky or not. In the eourse of a round he twice struck- the pin with his tes shot aud in each case the ball hovered on the brink of the hole. It is no doubt very nice to hole out in one but when the ? accompanyipg penalty is quadrupled 1 as was the case in the only known ' exampla in New Zealand, the golfer is certainly in doubt as to whether" he would have been pleasgd if the two shots had gone down. Cause for Thought The Hon. Gow created a slight ,di-. version at the Opotiki Dairy Factory annual meeting when he quoted David Ilarem as having said, "It is a good thing for a dog to have a few fleas stopping to think that he is a dog." Continuing Mr. Gow said that the meeting is indebt.ed to Mr. Martin and others who have endeavoured to give the directors cause to think of something other than the fact that they are directors. Hiking Club Meeting Rotorua is to have its hiking club if there is sufficient attendance at the meeting to be held in the Majestic Theatre to-morrow, Tuesday, evening when Mr. Hampson will preside and proposals will be p>ut forward to form a club. Founding of Auckland. Sunday was tbe ninety-second anniversary of the founding- of the city of Auckland. Governor Hobson who put through the deal for the site with the Maoris, had the Union Jack hoisted upon Point Britomart (which is now under the sea) and the citi- 1 zens celehrated the event with a regatta. Commemoration Trees To commemorate the twenty-first anniversary of the formation of the Girl Guide movement recently celehrated through the world, Rotorua guides, Brownies and Rangers paraded on Saturday afternoon and marched to the Government Grounds where trees were planted to mark the occasion. j Dairy Company's Payout. i According to notification received by the "Morning Post" from the manager of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. (Mr. C. L. Farlane) the payout for September 20, when the August supply will be involved, will be: — Butter, superfine, 11M per lh and 1/per lb for cheese. This is nearly lld more than for September last year. Bemefit ?datch. The Auckland Rughy Union has arranged a benefit match for the dependents of "Bert" Palmer (the All Black who died two weeks ago), between Poneke, the champion team of Wellington and the leaders in the Auckland championship. The match will be played at Eden Park on October 1. The music for the dancing will be supplied hy Tattersall's Orchestra, who are well known for their high class renderings. * Waikato Trotting Nominations. The Waikato Trotting Club has drawn up a fine programme for the meeting to be held at Claudelands on Saturday, October 8, and as the limits are arranged to cater particularly for the classes of paeers and trotters now in training in the province, there should be solid support given the gathering by local and district owners. The big race is the Mark Memorial of 150sovs, limit 4.37, and the fast sprint is the Visitors' Handicap of lOOsovs, limit 2.50.
