NAPIER HARBOUR
ENG I NEERS RECOM M ENI) ABANDQNING OF ANCIIORAGE. Napier, Monday. Very definite conclusions have been reached by two cngineers, who x-'ecent-ly investigated Napier's harbour problem. Messx's. F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief, Public Woi'lcs ^epartment, and M. D. Holdorness, -engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board, were asked to investigate and malce recomnxenda-
tions on the general question of harbour accommodation and the work that will be necessary with a vi-ew to mainLaining, providing and developing such accommodation in the wisest, most permanent and economical manner, hnving regard to providing the cheapest and most satisl'actory services to the district, in the light of the present and prospective financial resources and commitmcnts of the board, and also having regard to the vital question of preserving the board's trade cndowments and assets. Tlie question of siltation at the inner harbour was to be treated as a matter of urgeney. An. interim report prescnted by the engine»rs a few weelcs ago on the p.'robl'am of ini/er harbour siltation recommended that the Tutaekuri River, which flows into thc inner harbour, be immediately diverted. Their full report, which came before a special meeting of the Napier Harbour Board to-day, recommends that the breakwater harboux-, where medium sized vessels now berth. should bo developed, and that the inner harbour, now used for accomm.:dation of fishing craft and lightorrs, which transfer cargo between the shore and large overseas vessels anchorecl in the roadstead, should be . abandoned. The Harbour Board d-ecidcd to foilow the advice of Messrs. Furkert and Ilolderncss, by adopting their report as a basis of the board's future policy regarding harbour construction and development, and set up conimittees to put the recommendations into immediate effect. The board also decided to approach the Government to appoint a Commission, with the same wide p'owers as the Napier Commission, to assume control of harbour affairs at Napier and carry out the programme of workt outlined hy the board, and based r the advice of Messrs. Furkert ar Ilolderncss. (
