MAORI AFTERNOON

A lai-ge number was present at the monthly meeting of the Waiotahi Women's Institute on Wednesday afternoon, and three or four new members were 'enrolled. Delef?ates were appointed to attend the council meeting shortly to be held at Whakatane and remits, received from the executive, were discussed. The afternoon was devoted to a ' Maori display and there was a good display of kits in flax and feather (some being 60 years old), stone axes, ete., broug-ht by the members. Mrs. July brought several flax slcirts and gave a demonstration of how they were made. Members were very interested to hear an explanation of the Maori method of preparing and dyeing the flax. Anxusing and instructive items were given demonstrating Maori customs. Mrs. A. ^eoreceny gave a Maori calce wallc, Mrs. July a haka ancl two Maori children (Rawi Neri and Harry Collier) sang two Maori songs. Mrs. July won the prize for the heaviest kumara, entry in a kumara competition. "Mrs. F. C. Gibbs brought and distributed plants of the Institixte's emblem — the blue cornflower. Community singing and afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. The hostesses were: Mesdames Clayton, Rau, and Robinson.
