"OUT TO HINDER"

COMPLAINT AGAINST RULES GF UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD. THREATS OF RESIGNATION. "The Unemployment Board is out to hinder, and the unsympathetic action of the board, the Government and depai'tmental heads is most disappointing," declared Mr. H. Kitson at a meeting of the Christchurch GaVden Allotment Committee last week, when members complained about lack of assistance from the board in reference to the vegetable growing scheme, one or two of the'm threatening to resign. Mr. P. R. Climie, a member of the Unemployment Board, wrote that, while the board was appreciative of the work done by the committee, it regretted that it was unable to make funds available for the purchase of seeds. Mr. Kitson said .that members of the committee had given up valuable time to push the work on, but now found themselves blocked for want of help. If the present attitude of the board was continued tba various committees working on unemployment relief would not carry on. He himself felt like resigning. The committee was in an unfavourable financial position already, having £16 8s 6d in hand and owing,£21 18s 4d. Mr. W. W. Scarff said that Christchurch was doing more than any other city for the relief of unemployment, but had received no consideration from the board. The board had refused the Christchurch request for a grant to buy seeds, but money had been granted to Wellington for that purpose. The Unemployment Board was being paid for its job, but there was no money for the committees, which had to cadge and screw and scrape for the funds with which to carry on. The people asking them to do the pob were the ones who were throwing a spanner in the works. Mr. J. S. Barnett said that in spite of lack of assistance it was th'e duty of the committee to carry on. It was decided that Messrs. G. Maginness, W. W. Scarff and H. Kitson should wait on Mr. Climie with a request that he ask the Unemployment Board to review the committee's application for a grant, and that a letter be sent to the board asking for sympathetic consideration.
