Centre of Disturbance Wairoa is considered to be the centre of tbe disturbance. The earthquake maintained an extreme violence for approximately 90 seconds, and was followed at a few minutes' intervals by further shakes of lessening intensity, with occasional violent upward bursts accompanied by a noise similar to that of firing heavy guns.
