RURAL LANDS

DERAT1NG PROBLEM rotorua county adheres to its former views CONFERENCE ATTITUDE The question of the derating of fann lands which looms large in all conierehces of Farmers' Unions and meetings of County Councils came up again at the monthly meeting of the Rotorua County Council yesterday, when Crs. A. L. Keith and J. E. Martin reported that they had attended a conference held at Hamilton on Tuesday, August 23, for the purpose of discussing this question, but that after the subject had been attacked from all angles no finality had been reached. • The delegates from the New Zealand Farmers' Union had advocatad total derating, this view being strongly opposed by representatives of the motorists. All agreed that the whole of the motor taxation should be definitely earmarked for roading purposes. The consensus of the opinion of the majority of the counties represented ran in the direction of partial derating, but there was some difference of opinion as to the way in which this was to he applied. The county council decided that its views, which had been ably put forward by its delegates, were still unchanged and were that the benzine tax should be used to enable local bodies to derate the settlers to the extent of at least one-third of the present rateability.
