The question was raised at West London, when Joseph Batten, 25, a boolcmaker, of Pottery-Iane, North London, was charged with obstructing a police inspector and with gambling in a taxi. Insp. George told. the magistrate that at 3.30 a.m. he saw Batten, another civilian and two taxi-drivers playing solo for money in a-taxi. He told them they would be. summoned for gambling. Magistrate: What is this game of solo whist? I am afraid I don't know it. The inspector j explained it, and the magistrate remarked : "I suppose it is played in much the same way as whist?" — Inspector George: Yes. I thought whist was a game of skill. Is solo whist a game of skill? — No, sir; it is a game of chance. I suppose whether you win or lose depends on how you play your eards? — It is a chance what cards you get. Magistrate: Yes, of course; but that applies to all card games.
