EXTRA RELIEF WILL CEASE WITHOUT FURTHER ASSISTANCE SPENDING £90,000 A WEEK

— By Teleg-aph — >)owyrtght).

Wellington, Tuesday. Although the Unemployment Board | income for the financial year was es- jj timated at a figure which would en-i able it to spend £69,000 a week upon j all activities, it is understood auth- \ oratively that the board has been recently spending at the rate. of ap-pi-oximately £90,000 a week. r Shortly before he left for .Ottawa, \ the Minister of Employment, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, arranged that authority be given by the Government to enable the board to spend considerably more than its normal income each week during the winter months, ; the board having made available an extra £16,000 a week between June and September. Unless fnrther provision is made in the near future, this extra finance will cease. Thi's extra money was stated at the time to be needed for providing additional relief in rural districts'l where assistance was not on the same basis as that in the urban area.
