NEWS AND NOTES
rounding the winter. Although' there is little growth in pastures in this district at present — except in favoured plaees — there is abundant evidence that the worst of the winter period has passed and the next few weeks should see hig changes in the bare paddocks. But there is no doubt that rain— good warm rain, lasting over several days — is hadly needed to break up the effects of the record winter frosts and give p«astures a starb with spring growth. The cold has been exceptional this year and pastures have been sadly cut hy tlie frosts. This is particularly noticeahle on some of the young pasture on Ngakuru. Where the grass has not had time to become firmly established the more serious aspect of the frosts can he realised. But with warm rain there will soon he a change in the scene. A representative of the "Post" had an opportunity of inspecting the greater part of both hloclcs at Ngakuru on Monday and it is pleasing to be ahle to state that the whole property has come through the winter remarlcably well and gives rich promise of becoming a valuable dairying district. The land is, of course, presenting its worst appearance at the present time, but it seems quite plain that pastures throughout the area are worlcing toward a sound f oundation. Apropos of these pastures, it is worthy of note that Hawke's Bay rye has proved its worth' on pumice country. The use of this high-grade certified seed has been fully justified hy results. Horohoro native settiement is looking particularly well, especially the sheltered area at the foot of the plateau.
