PRESIDENT OF COUNCIL ARRIVES IN NEW ZEALAND
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Auckland, Monday. The president of the International Olympic Council, Count Dc Baillet Latour, arrived this morning from Los Angeles. He said the smashing of records was less important than the international spirit which the Olympic Games had inculcated. Originally England was the only country which participated in the contests for the sake of sport alone, but the spirit had spread, and was being more strongly inculcated at each successive contest. He paid a tribute to the wonderful oi*ganisation of the Los Angeles Olympiad. America had had a preponderance of victories, but other countries wero rapidly coming to the front. Mr. James Taylor, president of the Australian Federation, and Mr. J. S. Eve, manager of the Australian team, who also arrived by the Mariposa, commented upon the perfect conditions under which the contests were held. Mr. Eve expressed the opinion that the new records would stand for a long timo.
