NARROW ESCAPE
CAR STOPS ON BRINK OF STEEP DROP INTO GULLY A motoring accident, which had nearly fatal consequences, oecurred yesterday on the Mamaku Road, near the 22-mile peg. Miss J. Thompson, who was returning to Auckland with her mother from a tour in the North Island, struck some loose metal at a particularly dangerous part on the road. Her ear skidded, turned a complete somersault and stopped within a foot of a tremendous drop into the valley below. Miss Thompson, who was driving, escaped with a cut wrist and her mother was quite uninjured. The car was damaged to some extent and had to be towed back to Messrs. Spedding and Co.'s garage for repairs. During the week-end the firm's wreck service brought in three. other cars which had met with accidents on the Mamaku Road. Two of the cars were badly damaged, but luckily the occupants sustained no serious injury.
