LONDON CLUB CLOSES
STRANGE LEASE ARR AN GEMENT Ghosts of gallants of the days of Queen Anne must have gathered mournfully at the "Cocoa Tree" Club in St. James's Street, London, wh'en it closed its doors for a month — and perhaps for ever. The front part of the club premises belongs to one landlord, and the baclc part to another. The lease runs out in September, and while an arrangement was made about the back part, matters about the front could not he settled. The club, which is the second oldest in London, was actually started in 1746, hut it was formed by those'who frequented Wills's Coffee House, which' dated back to the days before 1700. In the old days it was a stronghold of the Tories, and was also a gambling place where there was very high play, • One night the stakes amounted to £180,000, # . .. L
