"CANARD")

(NOTES BY

The next meeting of any mcment is the Marton fixture 011 Saturday, and this is prineipally noted for the reappearance oi' the two-year-olds of last season in their threa-year-old capacity and ihe r.ew antry of babies. :i-. * As far as this distriet is coneerned the serious part of the business starts with Avondale, which is riol until Oetober 15, for it is at the suburban course that the two-year-oids have their first flutter and it is usually a good piace to sort out a likely one or two to follow for the season. V The dain of Phar Lap, after produeing three others, all full brothers or sisters to the ehampion, has been sent to the Elderslie stud, Oamaru, to be mated with illiad. Iliad is the son of a Derbv winner, and himself ran second to Blenheim. a * The Rotorua Hunt Club has drawn out an attractive piugramme for its Point-to-Point meeting on September 21st. There are six races and several field events. Entries have already been promised from the Waikato, Paeroa and other contiguous centres, and the racing should be interesting. Oue performer is iikely to be John Bull, one of the finest jumpers in the North Island. He is an enormous horse and in privaie life is known as "The Elephant." He did not start at Pakuranga owing to soreness, but is now working well at Cambridge. * a * According to a Sydney corrospondent, Cylinder is starting to come into his own aiid went a good gallop with Ammon Ra the other day. Cylinder has always been highly ragarded by "Canard," for on his breeding alone (Limond — Cymene) he inherifced wonderful staying blood. * =i= * In his last year in New Zealand Cylinder started eight tinws for five wins, two second:- and once unplaced. winning from all distances up to 11 miles. He might well be heard of ir such races as the Melbourne Cup1, for he showed great sticking power. * * * It waa bad hu'k for D. J. Burgcss to get concusaion when Commentator fell at Manawatu Hunt, for the Waikato jocla-y had gone dowu speeiulty for the iido. He pilcted liiily Boy in his \ ••inlo vctories of the Wint er Steeple^ ai Ellerslie, the Wellington Steeples, and the Ciand National. In each case his judicious riding* was practlcally the determining factor in the win and" ihe public will trust tlrat his injuries are not serious. * * * There are very few decenf hocns over country in the Dominion to-day and since Sanimy Henderson went out with that injury at Paeroa they have been fewer still. By the way, Sam Henderson and Mrs. Henderson ieft for Engiand recently, wh.-re there is a job waiting for him in oue of the big Yorkshire racing s ables. He is likely to be engaged in trninir.p hunfc?i s for Sir Mark Sykes, at the Maltcn stud. V A A Ward from Matamata is to the euec, i that Mateerh team is world ng satisfaetorily and that Prince Val is v *ry well after a brief let-up. Lord Val also has had a spell and he is back at work looldng very fresh. * * * At Tirau "Nudger" Cucksey ha? a very promising filly by Weathervane, a full sisier to Baroscope, for whom the nanie Barograp.h has been claimcd. "Nudger" is evidently detormined to fly high! * There is a particularly nice colt at' Takanini at present, a full brother to Gold Tinge, who displayed such wonderful early speed that Hector Gray dubbed her the best filly he had ever bestroue. However, she went sore later and never did mnch after she was sent to Australla. The Takanini colt is showing just as much early promise as his siste'- and went

like a train in a trial the other jnorn- 1 ing to line five other two-year-olds. He will bear watching and should he followed. j * * * : Anoth'ar Takanini filly to show up is Star Artist, the name claimed for i a full sister to High Comedy. She is naturally, therefore, hy Leighton — Comedienne and will be worth watching. j $ ^ Ernie Watson writes "Canard" from Palmerston North that he has taken up Patearoa again and that the Acre — Mangaoroa gelding is coniing right. Last season Patearoa contested 22 , races for four wins, one second and 'four thirds. He is likely to stay a distance better this season and should get his share at mid-island meetings, where the eompany is not too strong. * * * Bronze Eagle is back in work. The son of Brazen is very hard to train, for he easily goes off his tucker. His off fore-leg is also dickey, but Hector Gray hopes to land him back on the track fit. He has the hardest part to do, for though Bronze Eagle is a wonderful galloper he is too much of an invalid to belong to the average man. a * A Marton acceptances are: — JUVENILE PLATE of 50 sovs., 4 furlongs.
