DOG ATTACKS BATHER
A GALLANT RESCUE. A bathcjr attacked in the water by a fear-maddened dog was gallantly rescued at Pembroke Dock, on the West Wales coast, by a man who plunged fully clothed into the water. A girl's sereams drew the attention of four men fishing on Pennar Barracks pier to the plight of the bather, Sergeant Pierce, of the Royal Engineers. He was evidently exhausted, and had been severely mauled hy the dog. It is assumed that th'e animal had hecome frightened in the water, and frantically tried to clamber on the swimmer's back. Two of the fishing party, Bombardier Newton and Sergeant Plant, rushed to the shore. Newton, who was in uniform, plunged into the water and swam to Pierce's aid. With one hlow of his fist Newton killed the dog and then hrought Pierce ash'ore. Pierce was unconscious when rescued, and artificial respiration was tried for a considerable time before he showed signs of reviving. He was then rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
