Whakatane News

OBITUARY DEATH OF WIDOW OF LATE TE H.URINUI APANUI The death occurred suddenly this morning from heart disease, of the widow of the late Te Hurinui Apanui, a prominent Maori chief. The deceased was held in great respeet and a large tangi is now in progress at Wairalca Pa. Te Hurinui Apanui died in 1924 and in commemoration, his relatives presented a shield to the Whakatane Rugby Union to be played for annually by representative teams in the Bay of Pienty. A handsome monument to the late chiefs memory, perpetuating his loyalty to the British Crown and friendship toward the white people of New Zealand, stands at the entrance to Whakatane borough.
