DESTRUCTION OF FOOD PRESENTS URGENT PROBLEM
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
Masterton, Sunday. The present position of the fiooded area in the Southern Wairarapa is that the waters are falling, and this improvement will continue unless there is an unfavourable change in the weather. The areas in the region of the Lake which were threatened at the end of last week are safe for the time being. Many settlers have saved all their stoek, but in one case only about 100 acres remained unsubmerged out of a property of 2400 acres. In various places the stoclc losses have been heavy. A serious prohlem will arise over the feeding of the stoek, much of which is marooned on small areas. As the waters recede ultimately, there will be a splendid growth on the fiooded areas, but where much sjlt is left, there will be no feed for some time. Some hay has been brought in and more will be needed. Train.s are not yet getting through Fernside. The passengers were translxipped on Saturday, but it is expected the lines will be clear to-morrow.
