VETERANS' GOLF
TO-DAY'S MATCHES semi-final stages will be reached to-day PERFECT PLAYING CONDITIONS Perfect golfing weather, excellent playing conclitions, and keen finishes characterised yesterday morning's play in the Rotorua Golf Club's Veterans' Cup tourney, and it was quite obvious that the contestants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. With the preliminary rounds coneluded, the semi-finals will commence this morning in both the Veterans' Cup and the Secretary's Trophy, • whilst the finals will take place this afternoon. H. B. Luslc (Auckland) played remarkably consistent golf to beat A. w. Downer (Rotorua) yesterday afternoon and the standard of golf was high. E. Hutchison (Poverty Bay) won the morning medal round. Lusk Beats Downer In the second round of the Veteran's Cup competition, Lusk beat Downer, but it was a close go and the Aucklander had to put up a 71 to do it. In the early part of the round, Downer was topping and duffing, but he settled down in the closing stages to play good go f and put up 23 for the last six holes. Lusk went out in bogey and came back in 36, and with that had some bad luck, three of his putts lipping the hole and another stopping two inches short. Downer took the Vista on his handicap, both equalling bogey. At the second, Downer topped his drive and took five, Lusk playing beautifully for three. Lusk, one up. The third was halved on handicap, Downer missing a four-foot putt, and Lusk again doing a birdie three. Lusk took the Road, Downer striking trouble in the back bunker and picking up. Lusk was again on terms with i bogey. The Crossing was halved on handicap, Lusk doing it in bogey and | Downer, whose drive lipped the ravine, taking one more. He recovered well. Lusk won the Drop in three, Downer taking four after pull- | ing his first. ' At Westward Ho, Downer pulled into the rough and Lusk was in trouble on the right, but both made fine recoveries and Downer sunk a 30-foot putt to halve. Downer won the Summit with a fine approach both sinking in fives. Lusk took the Chasms, landing on the green whilst Downer went into the crater on the right. This put Lusk two up at the turn, and he had come out in a bogey 35. Downer went to pieces with his wood at Tipperary, taking seven. whilst Lusk, who played very straight sunk in five. At the Sentinels, Downer settled down and was pin high with his second. He was down loi a perfect four, Lusk taking the same. Downer's hole. Lusk took Taupo Road in five, Downer landing in the right hand bunker, playing three shots there and picking up. The Elbow was a gcod hole. Lusk sent away a fine wood and his second found the green. whilst Downer out-drove liim and taking his brassie played a perfect shot to the pin. Downer's hole. Both were on their game now and landed on the green at the Inlet where they halved in threes and repeated the do:-e at the Crater. The next was also halved on handicap and Downer won Ariki with a fine recovery. With a hole to go, and Downer one down. but with a str-.ke in hand, play was interesting. Downer pulled, but used a mashie to reael: the green, whil-t Lusk took a No. 3 iron and placed his second behind tln right-hand bunker, where it trickiet on to the green. Downer missed an easy putt, and Lusk won the mateh one up, the hole being halved. Results of Yesterday's Games were as follow: —
