IN COMMONWEALTH WORD "DEPRESSION" NOT BEING USED IN AUSTRALIA MAYOR OF AUCKLAND^ YISIT

-By Telegraph. — Copyright)

Auckland, Wednesday. The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, j returned to-day from a trip to Syd- | ney. I "Of the many people whom I met j •not one mentioned the word 'clepres- ; sion'; the prevailing spirit seemed to I be optimistic confidence," he said. "The defeat of Mr. Lang and the results of the Ottawa Conference have given new hope for the future. "Everyone, including many unemployed, with whom I spoke praised New Zealand's met-hod of dealing with unemployment — that is, work in preference to the dole," continued Mr. Hutchison. "A Minister of the Crown said to me: 'For God's sake do not go on to the dole. It is breeding a race of 'hoboes' in Australia/ "The dole is not paid in cash, but in rations. The scale is: — Single . men, 11s 4d a fortnight; married couples, 17s 3d; married couplies with • one child, 27s llSd; two to threo children, 37s 1 0 Yd ; four to five children, 44s 9id; six to seven children, 53s 2d; out of this the ls unemployment tax is deducted. "Last week a city bloek in Sydney sold for over £1500 a foot, which was £90 a foot higher than the 1929 valuation. "The opinion is held in Australia that New Zealand will recover more quickly. The reason is that in New Zealand even politicians are exploring business and economic mcthods of overcoming our difficulties, while in Australia, even business men are seeking political methods of tiding them over."
