Carterton, Wednesday. The floods as far as the Northern Wairarapa is concerned, are 'now over. Reports to hand show fairly large losses pf sheep and cattle, but not as great as was feared. Railway communication, north and south, is still obstructed, the mails arriving hours late. The north' mail was picked up by a motor -bus at Eketahuna and brought to Carterton. The south mails were transhipped over the washout at 'Fernside and arrived at noon. Flood waters still cover the lower valley to a great depth, though the Jevel is falling rapidiy at Pukeo and Pihautea. Tks Wairarapa Lake is open to the sea, and is rushing out in a vast turbid stream, but an enormous volume of water is running into the lake from the flooded iarea, causing the lake's level to rise, Stopbanks are checking the getaway through the narrows, and conditions are still serious in the lower parts.
