"Is there sueh a thing as nicotineless tobacco—tobaeco with no nicotine in it?" askcd a eustoiner of a Wellington tobacconist the other day. "No," said the tohaeconist, "thore is not. But there is much loss nicotine in some brands than otliers." "And is there no way of extractlng tho stuff?" enquired the eustoiner, adding, "poisonous, isn't it?" "It's deadly," replied the tobacconist, and continued: "Tho only way, I believe, is to roast tho tobacco, same as the manufacturers of the New Zealand brands are doing. They have installed an elaborato plant in their factory, I'm told for the purpose." "And does the roasting really got rid of the nicotine?" queried the customer, "Most of it. Sufficient to mahe it safe for the smoker to induige to any extent. Greatly improves the flavour and bouquet, too. It's a wonderful process." Replying to a further question the tobacconist said: "There are only four brands of toasted: Riverhead Gold, Out Plug No. 10, Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3." The customer is "trying them out."
