Hard on the Grocers.
A remark made by a member of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association that people got their bread and butter in grocers' shops and paid for them brought a prompt rejoinder from a grocer who was present that quite a number of them did not pay, as he knew to his cost. "If you introduce apples into the grocers' shops and the people- don't pay for them as well," he added, "the grocers will go out altogether — that would be the last straw."
