WORLD CONFERENCE HOPE FOR DESPERATE AND DISTRACTED WORLD FAILURE NOT CONTEMPLATED
. — By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. Aug. 29, 7.0 p.m. New York, Aug. 28. "The forthcoming world economic conference at London will present a real hope to the distracted and almost desperate world," said Mr. S. M. Bruce, in an address delivered here on Sunday night. He refused to contemplate the conference as a failure. He said that what had been done at Ottawa, applied to a wider sphere, should materially assist the restoration of world prosperity. "At Ottawa we realised the necessity for wide protection and tariffs for effieient industries," he said, "but we were equally convinced that prohibitive tariffs must be abolished. The fact that one group of nations was able to establish this principle should encourage hope that agreement may be reached in international fields." Mr. Bruce sails on Wednesday to take up his duties as residential Minister fpr Australia in London.
