MANAWATU DISTRICT

Palmerston N., Monday. The flooding of low-lying areas in the Manawatu district is considered imminent. Following heavy week-end rain in the Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa, the Manawatu River rose with remarkable rapidity during the night. Settlers are removing stock to the higher levels. Only one loss of stock, however, has so far been reported. The rainfall for the 24 hours ended at 9 o'elock this morning was 1.36 inches. The river now is bank high at most places, and much damage and loss 'of stock are feared if it continues to x-ise.
