THE WEATHER
The Government meteorologist issued the following weather report and forecast last night: — General situation: A shallow depression still remains centred near Auckland and an intense anti-cyclone now covers the Eastern Tasman Sea and the South Island. Forecast: Winds strong about and north of Cook Strait, with south -westerlies prevailing in the northern part of the North Island and southerlies southward'to Cook Strait; variable winds over the South Island with , south-easteriies and north-easterlies prevailing. Weather: Showery about Cook Strait but improving to-morrow; temperatures cold with frosts in the south, Following are the barometer, maximum arid minimum thermometer, sunshine, and rainfall readings recorded at the Government Observation Station by the Rotorua Tourist Department for the 24 hours ended at 9.30 a.m. yesterday.
