BARNES (OTAGO) WINS N.Z. CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMP. Christchurch, Saturday. The New Zealand cross-country championship was won by J. G. Barnes (Otago) in 37.37 N. F. Cooper (Auckland), 38.1 was second, and E. C. Brown (Otago), 38.13, third. * Team results were: Otago 23 points, 1; Wellington 30 points, 2; West Coast 50 points, Auckland 55 points, Canterbury 65 points. Barnes won decisively by 200 yards from Cooper. These two took the lead at the start and led from end to end, each taking a turn at pace-making. The Dunedin mafl proved ' too strong over the final stages. G. Bayne (Wellington) was fourth, and A. Barclay (Wellington), fifth'.
